News 4/21/10: Steve Wynn says he's considering moving his company's headquarters to Macau.
Steve Wynn built his namesake Wynn Las Vegas (2,716 rooms, opened in 2005) and the adjacent Encore (2,034 rooms, 2008). The golf course is planned to be replaced by a large convention center and two hotels with 5,200 rooms.
Wynn, the son of a bingo parlor owner, started his Las Vegas legend in 1967, buying a stake in the Frontier. After owning land at Caesars Palace in 1971, and a controlling interest in the Golden Nuggett in 1973, he opened The Mirage (1989) which started the luxury resort boom that has lasted to today. Wynn also opened Treasure Island (1993) and Bellagio (1998), before selling them all to Kirk Kerkorian's MGM Grand company in 2000 for $6.4 billion.
